Carmen Garcia Ramos
BIO
I am a Spanish multidisciplinary artist working in the Hague. Previously to graduating in Fine Arts and Design, I did a MA in Human Rights and Social Justice, my process and approach to art has something of forensic investigation, where traces, prints, and photographic works intrigue us.
Currently, I am working on a new series of prints on textile and cotton paper, if you would like to see more you are welcome in my studio during OpenAtelliers or send me an e-mail to arrange a private viewing.
Artist Statement
My work takes a critical view on motherhood as an institution and references the maternal; I understand the maternal in its broad sense, a way of seeing, and thinking, an attitude towards life. I work in the intersection between gender, rights and the everyday.
I find it important to work relational with my surroundings and others but also to look my own personal experiences. I get inspiration in my relationship with my small daughter. I share her fascination with the shapes, colours, objects, and materials she gathers. I find it important to give visibility to profound or very banal situations you find yourself in while being a parent, always surprising. Vulnerability, sleeplessness, excitement is as important as mending, garden-clot clearing, or house tiding.
I start from a collection, an inventory of totally random objects my daughter brings in her daily exploration of her environment. I collect them and keep them as traces of mothering and her existence in my life, almost as forensic proof. A piece of play dough, a smashed shell, a broken toy...a plastic trophy....I experiment with their uniqueness, softness, fragility, fragmented or torn qualities in different mediums in an attempt to document the act of bonding between parent and child.
